Need to get out fishing away from the normal spots!

Posted by Bronco66 in Untagged

Bronco66

I really am getting bored with fishing and need to hit some new spots. I wanna keep working on my species checklist and there are so many cool places to go but I don't wanna go by myself.  I need a road trip away from this place and need to leave to hit new places to keep fishing fun! I hate catching the same thing all the time! There's not as much fun in it anymore.

Cascade Lake

Posted by Bronco66 in Untagged

Last time we went to Cascade Lake, we slammed the Bullhead Catfish. Now its about 6 months later and I hope to kill 'em again but this time I'll be Ice Fishing. I don't think i'll have quite the same luck, but I'm really hoping to get super lucky and catch a Coho, Lake Trout, Musky or any new species to me! I have no real expectations of that but I can't wait to knock a few more species off my checklist!

Cabin Fever

It's now January 1st and still no snow. The hunting season kinda sucked and I miss fishing! I've finally caught my first fish ice fishing but I don't want to fish the same pond over and over again, and I do want to get back to my Fish Checklist. I want to make plans to fish Northern Utah and also Bear Lake to catch all the Bear Lake sub-species. In one trip I think I can catch up to 15 new Species if I get really lucky within just a few hours drive of Northern Utah. Probably gonna have to do a 3-4 day trip and camp out in the truck a bit and fish all day long to make it happen though. At least if I'm camping in the truck, I can park on the bank somewhere and just attach some bells! Hopefully just fish 24 hours straight! Can't wait for spring and camping weather!

Fly Fishing 2011

Posted by Bronco66 in Untagged

Bronco66

I ended up fly fishing quite a bit this year with a bit of luck! I caught a huge channel cat on a hopper, being one of my most memorable catches this year. I also caught quite a few trout on some alpine lakes! I also caught a few bass and trout and a sucker on some of the smaller rivers around. Overall I do like the fly fishing for smaller lakes and streams, but rod and reel I feel was and will be my go to method. I felt the top-water or dry flys were more my thing because I could see the action and knew what was going on. After the flys sink, I would just have to watch the line. I know there are indicators to help with that, but wasn't sure when to use them or not(lake vs. river.) Also when I'm bottom bouncing a river with rod and reel, I can feel it. I don't know how to feel what's going on the using a wet fly in the rivers. I'll be working on that a bit more next year.

I can't wait.

It's the end of our fiscal year at work this week, which means we aren't doing shit. We basically wait and let everything clear out and make sure we don't run into any issues...but that means I'm just sitting here. I can't wait to leave and see some daylight! I'm going fishing tonight. I can't just sit around anymore and I can't wait for the weekend to come.

Last Long Weekend to Fish?

Posted by Bronco66 in Untagged

Bronco66

Looks like it might be my last long weekend to fish, at least for an overnight trip or to get out of town a ways. After the Boise State game, KayLee and I are heading out Sat. through Monday night... but I don't know where to go yet!

I'm willing to go as far out as I need to I guess. There are so many awesome places I cant make up my mind. My boat is down for the count as of now, So I'll be fly fishing and KayLee will be spinner fishing. Stanley is kind of where I'm looking to go right now, and we'll be bringing a small raft. I was also looking at the Middle of North Fork of the Boise, or North of McCall, but I am always willing to try new places! Any spots outside of Boise within a few hours with camping and somewhat easy access would be ideal>

I don't care where we go and it doesn't have to be any special spots, but just a place we would love to go and would remember as a great last fishing trip this fall and would an be awesome way to end the season! 'Till ice fishing starts! haha

First Brown Trout!

Posted by Bronco66 in Untagged

Bronco66

Kaylee and I were headed to Reno, NV to see family and so she could compete in the Tough Mudder challenge, and I thought this would be an awesome chance for me to hook into my first Brown Trout. The Truckee River is an awesome fishery and has so many trophy fish. My first morning out this trip, I ran into a guy that was bottom bouncing worms and hooked and landed a ton of fish including 5 different species of Trout.  Rainbow, Cut-bow, Cutthroat, Brown and Golden. He did all this an less than 2 hours. I was set on trying to do the same! I fished 3 days for a couple hours at a time and managed to land a few but I'm not complaining. I managed to land a nice Rainbow with awesome color, a couple good looking cutthroat, and my first Brown Trout. I'll need to catch another so I can get a better pic and bigger fish but I was in a hurry to get 'em back in the water.  I can't wait to go back during their spawning season and try to hook into some of the same fish with all their colors and hopefully into a Nice Golden with it's spawning colors.

First Brook Trout

Posted by Bronco66 in Untagged

Bronco66

Finally got my first Brook trout. KayLee and I went hunting and fishing this weekend and brought the boat and dogs this time and of course all our gear. We got out there at night so just slept but the next morning got up and found a cow and calf elk but didn't have the tags for the unit we were in but it was cool to spot and stalk 'em. Got back to camp and went fishing and we caught some nice trout. We later tried to go Muskie fishing and it got a little crowded when our boat trailer broke a hub  and lost all the bearings. We had to empty the boat and throw it all in the truck. So we decided to launch the boat anyway cause we were all ready at the boat ramp but the engine wouldn't start. So we dropped the boat off to get the trailer fixed and got lunch and started fishing some streams and lakes in the area without too much luck but some is better than none. Hit quite a few spots but didn't give 'em too much time before moving on, cause we just didn't see any jumping or getting any hits. Saw a few deer but nothing we could get a shot on. Found a few neat fishing spots that we'll maybe head back to one day. Went back to our camp spot and had a quick fire but we were tired. Got up the next day and went fishing on the stream heading back into town to pick up the boat. And found a bunch of spawning Kokanee and Coho and a few really nice Brooks but we were having a a hard time getting their interest. I finally got lucky and picked a little brook out of a 15 by 15 hole where the mountain spring runoff pools up right before hitting the main stream. Managed to get 2 new species on my list so I can't wait to keep going with it and I almost don't want winter to come.

High Mountain Lakes

Posted by Bronco66 in Untagged

Bronco66

We've hit some more high mountain lakes, but they were the kind you can drive to this time. I think we'll have to work a little harder next time and be a bit more prepared and really put in some miles and time to get to the great spots. This means buying some more gear, which isn't gonna be possible this year so maybe we'll have to be crafty and use what we have as best we can. As in buying a single person raft at Walmart for 10$  instead of the super light backpacking rafts for $800. Another problem is right now is we are trying to hunt and fish at the same time, overloading the truck with pistols and rifles and bows and poles and coolers and hiking packs and camping supplies and dogs. I think it's time to pull everything I own out and pick through what is and isn't necessary to dumb it down a little bit. I'm gonna shoot the first deer I see and drop the bow, and maybe start carrying a smaller pistol so it's not such a nuisance. Then it's just a rifle and pack on my back and pole in my hand. Also, I think it's time to reorganize the fishing backpack so I'm only carrying what I need. We bring everything we have so we can really change it up but we use 5% of it. So I'm thinking only bring a single 6x10x1 in case for each type of fishing. Lakeside vs River vs Boat vs backpacking. I wish there was a better way for carrying bait also, as in not carrying a whole jar of power bait or eggs. I might look into that.

Hunting Season is Here!

Posted by Bronco66 in Untagged

Bronco66

So hunting season is here and we've made our first trip out without much luck. Saw a nice 5x5 about 4 in the morning and a few does, but nothing we could legally draw our bows on. Heard of a group that came up on a nice Black bear and a group of Wolves but unfortunately didn't have tags. But we did so we went looking for them but no luck. We did manage to bring our poles though (as always). We got into plenty of spawning Kokanee and a bunch of Rainbows in some high mountain lakes, but I was really looking for Brook Trout, Golden or Grayling. I can't wait to knock another fish off of my list of fish I want to catch.
