Fishing Report for 05/13/2012

Rating: Excellent (5/5)
Excellent pre-spawn/spawn pattern - the males had moved from the edge of the flats in the morning to the main-lake flats by mid-day and were cruising around eating and thinking about making love. If you threw something that looked like a crawfish you would get bit.

Not many fish - kind of slow. Did get a decent pickerel, but I wasn't able to call up any bass to take a bait.

Fishing Report for 08/11/2011

Rating: Not Good (2/5)
Fishing was tough after the front we just had move through... Nothing was shallow, and the scattered fish showing up in 12-14 feet of water were holding tight to cover and not biting. Got one pickerel on a spinnerbait in a weedbed near 10 feet of water, but other than that the action was sloooooow.

Good fishing - right before a thunderstorm, so the bite was on! Spinnerbaits in shallow weedbeds, and creature baits pitched into shallow cover got them going. Look for cover in less than 10 feet of water, and move the baits pretty fast to get bit.

The bite was a little slow - saw a few bass, got a few non-keepers, and hooked up with 2 pickerel. Look for a break from shallow to deep water with good cover. Everything today was in 8-12 feet of water.

Great day! There are still bass on beds, but there's also largemouth and smallmouth cruising the flats in post-spawn mode. Also, I hooked a couple of smallmouth that were in deeper water near the spawning flats. Try crankbaits in 6-10 feet of water, especially around the weeds, and creature baits on the shallow flats.

Another great day! Try creature baits and small-bodied crankbaits in 3-8 feet of water - especially if you can find some underwater humps or other types of structure with scattered cover on it.

Again, the weather was hot but so was the fishing! There were still some smallmouths on beds, but there were also some bass roaming shallow and along the deeper drop-offs. Creature baits and other soft plastics did the trick today. Look anywhere from 2-8 feet, and use green pumpkin or crawfish-colored baits.

Thank you pre-spawn and spawning peak! What a week - with a huge line of cells coming in, the action was awesome! 3-1/2 hours on the water and 14 bass! OK, most of the were bed fish, but the fact that they were picky as to the bait and presentation made it interesting to figure out. Look for anything shallow, and there they'll be.

Almost everything is on beds now, in 1-8 feet of water. But that's OK, as long as you immediately catch and release! I caught 7 fish today, and all of them went right back to their beds when I tossed them back. Crankbaits and creatures will do the trick.

Again, awesome day! 3 hours fishing, 5 big smallmouths! I saw another 10 fish on beds, probably a dozen big largemouth cruising the shallows, and the biggest pickerel I've ever seen. I had 4 other hook-ups, but I didn't get a good hook set on them.

Everything came on Yum Mighty Bug in Junebug. No crankbait action today, unfortunately. I wasted probably an hour-and-a-half with crankbaits before I switched to the creatures. Look in the 2-8 foot range for these bruisers.

Fish everywhere! There are bass on beds, bass cruising shallow water, and bass holding on deeper cover. Crankbaits and creature baits caught them today, and look for the action to stay the same or even improve over the next 4-5 days. If you're fishing in water between 2 and 8 feet, you should catch something.

Same as Opechee - thought I'd give it a try though. Once the wind picked up it was hard to control the boat. I didn't see any fish shallow, and what I did see on the fishfinder were fish suspending in 10 feet of water over deeper drop-offs, near 20 feet.

Had a little while to fish - tried soft plastics and crankbaits with no takers. The front that was due this afternoon moved in around 10:00AM, so there was heavy rain, wind, and the threat of thunderstorms for the rest of the day :(

A few bites but no fish landed - with the cold, rainy weather it doesn't look to get much better any time soon. Slow-moving crankbaits in crawfish patterns drew a few bites, but that was it.

Tourney time! Good day overall, although the weather was poor (cold front, rain), the bass were biting. Culled a couple and pulled a limit of two fish. All were caught on shallow points with crawfish colored crankbaits. Wish I had a camera...

Great pre-fishing for a tourney - bass are starting to move shallow, in 10-12 feet, especially on the breaks and around boulders. Crankbaits, suspending jerkaits, and creatures worked very well. Again, no camera, so I can't post what I caught, but half a dozen smallmouth in the 2 lb. range. Awesome!

First day out in 2011! Just got over a cold front, so it was bluebird skies with a little wind. Got a couple weak bites from bass in 18-23 feet of water, and had 2 hook-ups that came off at the boat - smallmouth bass that fell for a jig in about 10 feet of water. Another week or so and pre-spawn should be picking up. Try Jigs dragged along the bottom, or suspending jerkbaits worked over some kind of cover. Fishing is tough right now...

Tried everything from 3 feet down to 15 feet - I saw a number of fish on the sonar, but nothing seemed to get them to bite. I hooked up with a decent smallmouth in about 5 feet of water using a green pumpkinseed creature bait. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits and other soft plastics were ineffective. Once the wind picked up, it was too tough to keep the boat where I wanted it.

Nothing... I looked deep, shallow, and in transition, and nothing. Crankbaits, lipless cranks and spinnerbaits didn't yield anything, and slow or fast worked soft plastics blanked as well. Once the wind picked up so it was tough to control the boat, I split.

If I had to make a suggestion, I would say fish the windward side of the lake where the waves are crashign against shore and stirring things up. Soft plastics and crankbaits down to 8 feet usually produce bass, but not today...

The fishe were shallow and aggressive! Look in the weeds for largemouth, smallmouth and pickerel. If you find vegetation anywhere from 6" to 6 feet deep, you'll be on the fish. Spinnerbaits and crankbaits were working very well today. Tried some slower presentations to no avail. Work 'em fast and catch the bass!

Has another storm front roll through, the fish were shallow and scattered. I got two nice smallmouth with a crankbait in 6 feet of water, and a few other bass in 10 feet with tube baits. No rhyme or reason - some were in cover, others were scattered and roaming. Try all different depths, and hopefully you can figure out a pattern.

The weather has been starting to stabilize, and the fish are moving off the cover and scattering. Try spinnerbaits and soft plastics in the weeds from 4-12 feet of water, and deep diving crankbaits and soft plastics on the rocks down to about 20 feet.

Fishing was slow, but once I got on the bass they were biting. The fish were in 15-18 feet of water, and were hitting creature baits in Green Pumpkinseed color. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits and other plastics weren't working. Look for bass around deep drops and isolated cover on the structure.

The fish are biting - bass are in 12-16 feet of water, holding near some cover. If you can find a hump or even a small rise with weeds or rocks on it, you're in business. Largemouth and pickerel were in the weeds between 3 and 10 feet of water - soft plastics, tubes and spinnerbaits were all working. Smallmouth are still hitting crankbaits like they'll never see them again. All in all, if you're willing to spend a few minutes looking for the fish, they're very catchable once you find them.

Fishing was good - lots of bass in the 7-15 foot range - largemouth were up in the weeds, smallmouth were deeper along breaks and in the rocks. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits and tube baits all worked well.

Spinnerbaits worked especially well for mussels...

The bite was good until the storm hit... Got a few good bites on a crankbait and tubes in about 6-10 feet of water. The weather cooled off after days of triple-digit heat, and I hope the bite stays good after the storm passes. Look for weed beds and rocks or weeds on key structure to hold bass.

A slow bite again today... I got one smallmouth bass on a crankbait in 8 feet of water, and two misses on buzzbaits in 4 feet of water, but the baitfish were scattered and so were the bass. It cooled off overnight, it was very windy, and this unstable weather has really slowed things down.

Spent 4 hours on the water - got 2 strikes, no hook-ups though (my fault). We had a cold front move through, and the wind was between 13-15 miles per hour, so staying on a spot was tough. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and tubes were tossed between 5 and 25 feet with no action. Plenty of fish on the sonar, but no catches. I would suspect that fishing will be slow until the weather stays stable for 2-3 days. once the fronts pass, the action should pick up. I spoke with two other fishermen and they both said they were skunked as well (one was trolling for trout, the other was looking for bass).

I was hoping that the front coming through, mixed with the hot & humid weather, would stir things up a bit, but alas, the bass are still holding on deep structure and are inactive. If you're out, try the area of Mosquito Bridge, around Hog Island, or south of Mohawk Island. Humps in about 15 feet of water were holding fish, they just wouldn't take what I had to offer.

The Pumpkinseeds were biting from the shoreline down to about 8 feet, and the bass were all holding in 15 feet or deeper water hugging the bottom - recent front came through, bringing cooler temperatures and rain. I would suspect for the next couple of days the bite will be off, and should improve with stable weather.

Bass fishing is great - Smallmouths are active over the rocky points from 3 feet down to about 12 feet - surface temp is at 68 degrees, a little cooler due to the recent rain and cold front. The crankbait bite is on, and spinnerbaits are working well in the weeds.

Great fishing in all areas of the lake - Around the Winnisquam bridge and the southern part of the lake was especially good. Bass are anywhere from 2 feet to 10 feet, depending on cover, and crankbaits have been working very well.
