Get Bit Tip of the Day

Fishing during the Fall can be amazing. With the bait run in full swing along most coasts fish are feeding heavy and often not being picky. If you find yourself on the fish but unable to convince them to eat, try downsizing your leader and hook for a more natural presentation.

Beat the Heat

Beat the Heat!! Summertime is in full swing in the southeast and man is it Hot and the Night Fishing is even Hotter!! The afternoon rains cool things off and often trigger fish to feed well into the night. Try slow crawling a Junebug lizard through vegetation or popping a JitterBug across the top for Explosive Night Bites!!

Slow retrieve of lipless crankbaits

When throwing lipless crankbaits such a rattle trap, try slowing your retrieve just slow enough to 'tick' the vegetation. When the bait gets hung up, 'rip' your rod tip up and away and be ready for a strike. This method has probably caught more fish and won more money in Florida than anything else.

Crankbait action against structure

When fishing lipped crankbaits, try and 'bang' your bait into every piece of structure possible. Bumping your bait into a stump, dock, rock, mud bank, irrigation pipe, or anything else you can find will change the action of your bait and often trigger strikes from otherwise lethargic fish. Putting keeper fish in the boat is well worth the risk of hanging up.

Spinnerbait and braided line

SpinnerBait, Braid. Try throwing your spinnerbait on braid the next time you go out. The sensitivity is AMAZING and the thin braid cuts through vegetation that would stop mono dead in its tracks.

Remember to Have Fun

Remember to have fun!! It is easy for some of us to take fishing so seriously that it can take the fun out of it. Remember that the reason we fish is because we love it. Use your knowledge and skills to capitalize on your time on the water but don’t take it overboard. Relax, you’ll have more fun and probably catch more fish!

Parallel Casting

When fishing from the bank try casting parallel to shore rather than straight out. Often times the fish are hiding/feeding in the near shore vegetation that is often cast right over.

10

Staying Ahead

Get ahead of the fish. When the fish are visible whether it be to the naked eye or on your depth finder, setup ahead of where they are heading and use the wind or current to lead you to the fish as quietly as possible.

How to Win the Fight

When fighting a big fish from a boat resist the urge to constantly ‘chase’ the fish. Use the boat to gain line initially when the fish is making long runs but when it slows down try to keep the boat just close enough to maintain a 45 degree angle on the line. This puts maximum pressure on the fish which means you stand a better chance of catching your fish of a lifetime.

Fish. How To Find Them.

Look for moving water. Fish are opportunistic feeders using everything they can to ambush prey spending as little energy as possible. Look for points either exposed or submerged where fish may be laying waiting for a tasty morsel to swim by. Look for pinch points where bait is funneled making it easy for fish to feed and get ready to GET BIT!!

Mono or Braid

Mono or Braid? Braid offers amazing strength vs. diameter making it easy to put the heat on big fish with smaller tackle but in some situations you need the stretch of mono. For instance, when throwing baits with small treble hooks, mono is a must to absorb head shakes keeping the hooks stuck home.

Polarized Sunglasses

Site Fish? Then you know that polarized sunglasses are a must and every inch of height over the water that you can gain can be the difference of hooking up or going home empty handed. Try putting a cooler on your front deck and standing on it while scanning the water. Look for anything such as a shadow of a fish or a pothole that may be hiding one.

Avoiding Misses

Tired of missing strikes and losing fish? Try adding a stinger hook if you are using bait, trimming your skirt if you are using a spinnerbait, downsizing your lure, or whatever you need to do to put the hook in the strike zone. Now the fish has no choice but to get a face full of hooks. Get Bit!!

Getting the slowest fish to bite

Ever been in a situation where you know the fish are there, you’ve thrown everything at them but just cannot get them to eat? Try dead sticking a soft plastic. Make your cast, let the bait settle, twitch the bait and wait till you can’t stand it, wait some more, twitch it and repeat. It’s painful, but can trigger the most lethargic fish to eat even when they don’t want to.

Topics: plastic, bait

Drag tension - Washers

Ever notice that the drag on your reel doesn’t seem as smooth as it used to? Chances are that your drag washers are worn and need to be replaced. Many reel manufacturers will replace drag washers for a small fee or you can do it yourself with a kit from smoothdrags.com. Don’t lose that fish of a lifetime due to a sticky drag!

Take a Family Member

Take a Family Member or a Friend!! There is nothing more enjoyable than sharing a great day on the water with someone else!! Better Yet, take someone who doesn’t know much about fishing and focus on making their trip a success by putting down your rod to help them get hooked on the sport we all love!

Use a loop knot for live bait

The next time you use livebait, try a loop knot. They allow your bait to swim freely adding more action to your bait. Big fish didn't get big by being dumb, try a loop knot and fool that monster you've been looking for.

Topics: knots, line, bait

Lighter tackle can get more bites

When the bite gets slow or when fishing in clear water try downsizing your line and leader. You may lose a few fish due to break offs but you can’t catch them if you can’t hook ‘em….

12

Match the hatch

Match the hatch! When on the water, pay attention to all life signs both in and around the water. If you see gulls diving you may want to use smaller lures because the fish are probably keeping small baitfish just like the gulls. When schools of mullet are present try and see what size they are and experiment with different colors based on the color of the water. Don’t be afraid to mix it up with a crazy color!! Sometimes the lure that stands out amongst thousands of natural baits is the one that catches the fish’s eye!!

13

Equipment

Match your equipment to the task at hand. There is nothing more uncomfortable than fishing with an outfit where the rod and reel are mismatched. When purchasing a rod and reel ask your local tackle shop owner.
